The New York Knicks just ended a 53-year title drought, and some fans celebrated by attacking police horses and torching Times Square.
Story Snapshot
- The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the 2026 National Basketball Association Finals, 94-90, winning their first title since 1973.
- Jalen Brunson scored 45 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, to lead a comeback from 16 points down.
- Thousands flooded the streets of New York City after the win, but celebrations in Times Square turned violent.
- Rioters attacked New York Police Department horses and vehicles, and at least one fan was arrested for climbing a streetlight outside Madison Square Garden.
53 Years of Waiting Ends in San Antonio
The last time the Knicks won a title, Richard Nixon was in the White House and a gallon of gas cost 36 cents. That drought ended Monday night when Jalen Brunson took over the fourth quarter in San Antonio. The Knicks trailed the Spurs by 16 points and looked finished. Brunson scored 15 of his 45 total points in the final period alone. New York held on to win 94-90 and claim the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time since 1973.[1]
National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver handed the trophy to Knicks owner Jim Dolan, team president Leon Rose, executive William Wesley, and head coach Tom Thibodeau on the court in San Antonio.[2] The moment was 53 years in the making for a fan base that has endured decades of heartbreak, bad contracts, and playoff exits. New York City had not seen a moment like this since Willis Reed limped onto the court at Madison Square Garden in 1970.[10]
Times Square Erupts, Then Turns Ugly
Back in New York, the reaction was instant and massive. Thousands of fans poured into the streets near Madison Square Garden and flooded Times Square late into the night.[9] Watch parties at Radio City Music Hall and parks across the five boroughs turned euphoric the moment the final buzzer sounded.[8] Madison Square Garden lit up in team colors. The energy was real, and for most fans, it was pure joy after a very long wait.[5]
But parts of the celebration crossed a clear line. Videos shared on social media showed rioters in Times Square attacking New York Police Department horses and damaging police vehicles. One fan was arrested after climbing a streetlight outside Madison Square Garden.[3] Reports described vandalism and destruction spreading through parts of the city as the night went on. One Twitter post called it flatly: fans went out to vandalize and destroy vehicles and property after the win.
Attacking Police Horses Is Not Celebration, It Is a Crime
Let’s be direct about what happened. Attacking a police horse is not a victory lap. It is a felony in New York. Those animals are trained officers, and the people who hurt them or the officers riding them deserve prosecution, not excuses. The fact that a sports team won a basketball game does not give anyone the right to destroy public property or assault law enforcement. This is not a political statement. It is common sense, and most Knicks fans would agree.
Knicks fans spilled out on the streets of New York to celebrate the team’s championship victory, a moment many say has united New Yorkers as the city gears up for Thursday’s celebration. @theMarquiseF reports from Madison Square Garden for #SundayTODAY. https://t.co/7miri4eDYA

Some voices on social media were already calling on the Knicks to cancel any public parade or street celebration, citing the chaos as proof that a large-scale event could make things worse. That is a reasonable concern. City officials and the New York Police Department will have to weigh the joy of 8 million people against the real risk of more violence in the streets. The Knicks deserve a parade. The rioters do not deserve to ruin it.
What Brunson and This Team Actually Pulled Off
Strip away the chaos and the story underneath is genuinely remarkable. Jalen Brunson, a player many teams passed on, became the engine of a championship run in the biggest market in American sports. The Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers to reach the Finals, then beat a young Spurs team in five games.[7] The comeback in Game 5 alone ranks among the best clutch performances in Finals history. New York has not lacked for great athletes over the years. It has lacked this feeling for more than half a century.[2]
The city earned this title. The fans who stayed in their neighborhoods, watched at bars, and hugged strangers on the subway platform earned this moment. The small group that chose violence stole headlines that belonged to Brunson and his teammates. That is the real loss of Monday night, and New York should not let it stand.
